Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. In her childhood, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
